A template is like a master page that defines how your content looks on the screen.  

It contains all the elements that are repeated on different pages, eg the background image, the heading, menus etc. Text and images that are unique to each page are merged with the template prior to displaying the page.

Applying the same template to all or a number of pages within your site ensures a consistent look-and-feel.
